Jennifer Lopez’s latest romantic comedy “Marry Me” lands in theaters and on Peacock on Friday, Feb. 11, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Also just in time for the holiday, Variety looks back on the most memorable wedding dresses worn in film over the years, including Lopez’s 95 pound gown in the new flick.

“Marry Me” follows musical superstar Kat (Lopez) as she decides to marry a complete stranger (Owen Wilson) after being cheated on. In the movie, Lopez wears a glamorous, embellished wedding gown with sequins covering the massive skirt and veil — and that’s just one of the many stunning wedding dresses featured on our list.

  • “Marry Me”

    Caroline Duncan knew she would need a showstopper of a wedding dress for the Jennifer Lopez starrer “Marry Me.” The wedding dress is not just a key character in the film — it is at the center of the story.

    Lopez plays Kat Valdez, one half of the mega-celebrity couple Kat & Bastian, played by singer Maluma. The two plan to get married on stage and stream their nuptials around the world while performing the film’s titular hit single… until Kat discovers Bastian has been cheating on her.

    Duncan pulled the dress from Zuhair Murad’s bridal collection. The strapless Cinderella-esque rose-gold metallic gown consisted of nine layers constructed of silk taffeta, horsehair and tulle. The delicate combination of sparkling crystals, silver, ruffles, embroidery and lace made it extremely heavy — the dress weighed 95 pounds and required five people to zip Lopez in.

  • “Enchanted”

    Disney’s “Enchanted” portrays a modern-day Snow White-esque story with Amy Adams starring as Giselle, a princess-to-be. When Giselle is banished by the evil queen to New York City, she still sports her wedding dress.

    Like all Disney princess dresses, this is a grand outfit that weighed 45 pounds and took Adams 15 minutes to get in and out of. With poofy sleeves and a big gown, the white look with spellbinding embroidery made for the ultimate real-life princess dress.

  • “My Big Fat Greek Wedding”

    When Toula Portokalos (Nia Vardalos) finally gets to marry the man of her dreams, she walks down the aisle in a traditional dress with short sleeves and a full skirt. A white rose made from applique decorates the top of the dress, which is also adorned with white lace gloves and a pearl choker.

    It’s a perfect dress for Toula who has been waiting her whole life for something to happen. Of course, Ian (John Corbett) wouldn’t be Greek Orthodox, and just as funny is watching him convert and go through all the wedding rituals — including well-wishing aunts spitting away bad spirits. The dress and wedding ceremony serve as the perfect payoff after audiences go on this comedic journey with Toula, her family and Ian.

  • “Coming to America”

    John Landis directed the original “Coming to America” in 1988, and his wife, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, built the costumes for the film, landing an Oscar nomination for her creations.

    Landis studied African tribes and culture to build the aesthetic for the fictional kingdom of Zamunda. While she created many lavish and regal looks, the most unforgettable is the pink dress worn by Shari Headley for her wedding to Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy).

    The dress was made with plenty of pink tulle, but the look’s standout item is the royal crown, made with pearls, coral and 14 karat gold.

  • “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn”

    Say what you will about the “Twilight” films, but there’s one thing no one can argue: When Kristen Stewart’s Bella is ready to marry Edward (Robert Pattinson), she couldn’t have looked more flawless in her white, long-sleeved, elegant gown made by Carolina Herrera.

    From afar, the floor-length dress with a Bardot neckline and short train appears simple. Close-up, it’s the details the shine. The crepe satin lace design took six months to create, as it includes 17 buttons on each sleeve and 152 buttons on the back. The oval-shaped back also includes a Chantilly lace border veiled in tulle.

  • “Steel Magnolias”

    Julia Roberts wore quite a few wedding dresses on the big screen in 1999’s “Runaway Bride,” but it was 10 years prior that she donned the perfect southern look as Shelby Eatenton Latcherie in “Steel Magnolias.”

    The over-the-top white look included off-the-shoulder cap sleeves and a ball-gown skirt, with delicate pink flowers all over. The oversized pink bow on the back is impossible to miss, as is the look on Shelby’s husband’s (Dylan McDermott) face when she enters the church.

  • “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement”

    Grab those tissues. There’s nothing quite like a royal wedding, and when Princess Mia (Anne Hathaway) walks down the aisle in a stunning lace-sleeved wedding dress, it brings tears to one’s eyes.

    Mia’s dress is pure elegance — a plain figure-hugging skirt and a laced bodice with off-the-shoulder sleeves — and her veil and crown are simply regal.

  • “Father of the Bride”

    Whether you’re thinking of the original 1950 classic starring Elizabeth Taylor, or Nancy Meyers and Charles Shyer’s 1991 remake, the dresses will go down as some of the best in film history. Focusing in on the 1991 Steve Martin-led film — Kimberly Williams’ first movie — the dress was one of dreams, created by costume designer Susan Becker.

    With long sleeves and a modest high neck, the gown included hand-beaded Belgian lace and delicately covered buttons down the back. Of course, the film’s fans also loved that she paired the look with lace-covered Nike sneakers — the perfect nod to her dad, who owned a sneaker business.

  • “Bride Wars”

    Costume designer Karen Patch worked hard on the 2009 film to create the styles of longtime best friends Liv (Kate Hudson) and Emma (Anne Hathaway). When it came time for the characters’ big weddings — on the same day, in the same location — they both were dressed by Vera Wang, but in very different looks.

    Patch wanted Liv to look like the classic fancy bride — her over-the-top, strapless ball gown accessorized with a purple belt. Meanwhile, Emma’s taffeta gown was more traditional and romantic, made to look like it was a family heirloom.

  • “Sex and the City”

    When Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) finally marries Big (Chris Noth), she chooses to do so in the courthouse, wearing a very simple dress. But before that, she has other plans, showing up to the New York Library in an anything-but-simple, massive Vivienne Westwood gown. Carrie topped off the unique, layered, beige creation with a vintage, blue feathered headpiece and carried a bouquet of roses. Her bridesmaids, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha, each wore bright pieces made by Zac Posen.

  • “The Parent Trap”

    Just because there was no actual wedding in Lindsay Lohan’s 1998 version of “The Parent Trap” doesn’t mean there wasn’t an iconic wedding dress. In the film, Hallie (Lohan) goes along with her mom, dress designer Elizabeth James (portrayed by the late Natasha Richardson), to a photo shoot.

    There, Hallie joins the model, who is posing in a stunning, bright white, chic dress with a subtle shimmer. The back of the gown includes a sheer panel.

    In the scene set to Jakaranda’s “Never Let You Go,” Hallie dances around with the model as she adds a top hat to her look.

  • “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”

    Oscar-nominated Trish Summerville was the costume designer behind Katniss’ (Jennifer Lawrence) wedding dress in “Hunger Games: Catching Fire.” However, readers might remember the theories that designer Alexander McQueen was the genius behind the dress, which was adorned with Swarovski crystals on the bodice.

    The dress featured silver flames rising, which nodded to the Mockingjay motif, while its skirt was flowing with ruffles and plenty of chiffon.

  • “Crazy Rich Asians”

    In Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of “Crazy Rich Asians,” the wedding dress worn by Araminta (Sonoya Mizuno) is a showstopper of a piece, created by costume designer Mary Vogt.

    Thousands of gold Swarovski crystals adorn the bodice of the dress — after all, it’s the biggest wedding in Asia. And while the dress is flowing in embroidery and tulle and lace, Araminta walks down the aisle barefooted. Why? Because she’s walking on water. It’s a majestic movie moment that captures the very essence of the film: crazy and rich.

  • “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones”

    Before giving birth to Luke and Leia, Anakin Skywalker and Padmé Amidala, played by Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman, tied the knot wearing out-of-this-world looks.

    Portman’s fitted V-neck gown had a long train with intricate details, and she wore a cap-like veil that matched the design. The look consisted of three separate pieces: an underdress, overcoat and veil.
